Tanweer describes himself as ‘just an ordinary working-class lad’.
Born in Bury (Lancashire), the son of illiterate parents from Pakistan, Tanweer moved to Redbridge as a teenager where he completed his secondary education at Wanstead High School.
He later studied for his A-Levels at Beal High School.
After his studies, Tanweer joined a small bank as a trainee cashier, and eventually rose to become the global head of financing for a large international bank.
Currently, Tanweer is the managing director of a financial services firm specialising in emerging markets.
A passionate believer in equality and social justice, Tanweer has been a Labour voter all his life and has been an active member for 22 years.
Tanweer has lived in Mayfield ward since 2001, where he is also the chairman of the local Labour Party.
Tanweer has campaigned extensively for Mayfield, including successfully lobbying the Conservative council in Redbridge in 2003 to get a pelican crossing installed outside Mayespark Primary School on Goodmayes Lane.
He was subsequently offered (and gladly accepted) an invitation from the school to be one of its community governors.
A member of the South Park Users Group, Tanweer regularly volunteers for their litter pick sessions.
Currently, Tanweer is working on several charitable and social enterprise projects, including setting up a community food initiative.
He is also the co-founder of the UK’s first altruistic lender helping the most vulnerable get access to interest-free short-term loans.
Married with two daughters, Tanweer is an ardent Liverpool FC fan, a terrible golfer, and an enthusiast photographer.
Tanweer holds a master’s degree from the University of Cambridge.
