I have lived here in Seven Kings for 51 years, I went to school here, got married here and raised my family here.
I’ve been a Councillor for Mayfield for nearly 12 years, canvassing regularly and holding weekly surgeries – I know the area like the back of my hand, and I understand my residents.
When I first became leader of the Labour Group in November 2011, Redbridge was a Conservative stronghold. By 2014 Labour had taken control of the Council for the first time in its history. By 2018 we had all but wiped out the opposition, winning 51 out of 63 seats – with Ilford South now a Tory free zone and no Liberal Democrats in the borough.
I’ve put the work into Redbridge and helped transform the area, investing in infrastructure and developing a strong council and parliamentary majority. I believe I can continue to serve the area.
I have proudly led Redbridge Labour to victory in two local elections and have worked closely with our local MPs to assist with 4 successful Parliamentary elections.
Previously I served my branch as Secretary, Campaign Coordinator and Treasurer respectively. This year I have been elected to serve as Executive Lead for Crime and Public Protection for London Councils and am also the chair of the LGA Labour group.
I am a committed campaigner and have led by example by dedicating myself to canvassing in every ward across Redbridge and in other marginal seats. I have campaigned in seats like Chingford and Woodford Green, Thurrock, and Southend where we need to win to deliver a Labour Government.
Even under austerity we have managed the council finances well and achieved stunning success:
· Reopened the public toilets the Tories closed
· Brought in free 1 hour parking
· Introduced the enforcement hubs
· Became a London Living wage Borough
· Navigated the pandemic by leading from the front
